We celebrate our 10 Year anniversary with a short film by Maria Inês Afonso
How quickly ten years pass. In the early days of 2011, Matthew and I sat in a London cafe to discuss launching a label.
Influenced by the inspirational women in our lives who had demanding careers and lifestyles, we wanted to offer a different point of view on day dressing. At the time, exciting design in shirting was not the norm. With its rich history, we felt that the shirt could provide opportunities for us to explore methods in which to rejuvenate, refresh and reinterpret. With only a small amount of savings in hand from student competitions, it also meant we could could roll out our brand with just a single roll of white cotton poplin.
We launched our first collection as part of NewGen sponsorship from the British Fashion Council at London Fashion Week September 2011: 17 white shirts hanging on a clothes rail. Albeit simple, the design and brand concept was strong enough to garner the attention of a handful of globally recognised retailers and American Vogue who playfully dubbed us “the shirt boys”. Through the years, our profile and retail presence grew and palmer//harding is now stocked at more than 50 doors internationally
Along the way we received numerous accolades and opportunities including: 4 seasons of NewGen, being a part of Italian Vogue Talent Corner at Milan Fashion Week, designing uniforms for Salone Di Mobile Milan, creating 2 sell out collaborations for John Lewis, opening Bangkok Fashion Week, being awarded BFC Fashion Trust for 3 seasons and wining the 2017 British Vogue Designer Fashion Fund. Dressing influential people such as Michelle Obama, Olivia Coleman, Billy Porter and Bernadine Evaristo reinforced our core values of purpose.
As we enter our second decade of business we are excited to further understand the evolving needs and desires of our modern diverse and sophisticated clients. We are passionate to continue progress on our journey towards even greater socially and environmentally responsible fashion. But mostly we are excited to carry on fervently in our pursuit of creativity and innovation. We are humbled by the opportunity that has been provided to us through a seemingly simple idea of re-designing the shirt and thank you for joining us in this journey.
